How to distribute music worldwide for free?

It’s very easy to distribute music worldwide, but there are some artists that don’t understand how this works and hence lose potential listeners, and this is why I decided to write this post and explain how to distribute music worldwide, for free. 🤑

To distribute music worldwide, eg. to Spotify, iTunes, Tidal, and so on, the first step is to register with the music distribution company.

Some of the more known are TuneCore, Distrokid, and RouteNote.

My go-to music service is RouteNote because they allow you to distribute your music completely for free.

Of course, they take a 15% cut from your royalties this way, but if your song doesn’t pop you don’t lose anything. You still get to keep your song on all platforms forever, free.

This is pretty much a win situation for every artist.

If your song starts getting big numbers, you can upgrade it as a Premium release, and then you keep 100% royalties for the next year. You can do this when your release earns over $120/year. Otherwise, you can keep it as a free release on RouteNote. That’s my 2 cents.

They really made it possible for every artist to get their music distributed worldwide for free.

And they deliver your music basically to every known platform, not just the main ones.

Although I rarely get any royalties from these smaller platforms, it’s good to have your music on as many platforms as you can. Since it’s free, it doesn’t hurt, right? 🙈

You never know where your song might be streamed and go viral.

Your music will also be found on Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok, so there’s even more reason to put your music out there. I know most other music distribution services are charging a flat fee only to send your music to TikTok or Instagram, which is basically insane!

So, if you never released your music before, here are a few things you need to prepare before you start.

  • Your mixed & mastered song (mp3 or FLAC)
  • Cover art (resolution 3000×3000)
  • Names of people who collaborated on the track (producers, features, etc)

When that’s done, you’re ready to go. The only thing that’s left is to upload your song and push it for release.

And that’s it, within a week or so your song will be on every major and other platform worldwide for free.

If you haven’t released a song yet, now it’s the best time to start!

Register your free account on RouteNote and start releasing music worldwide.

Hope this helps!
