But let's go back to basics first... As with anything, when you're releasing your song, you must follow few steps. And I know, now you're probably wondering...
"What are THE STEPS to get more fans and make money of your music, even without playing standard industry game?"
You could say there are some "secret" steps you have yet to learn, but you would be very, very wrong...
These "5 SIMPLE STEPS" are the ones you should follow with every song or album - from the beginning of the song all the way up to the release date:
- Write dope lyrics to quality beats
- Record best possible vocal takes
- Mix & master song so it represents you in THE BEST possible way to your current and new fans
- Distribute your song worldwide
- Promote, promote, promote...
While most artists struggle with the last and I understand why, (we'll cover that later), a lot of artists I know take first 3 steps for granted. It's a huge NO NO! That's your FOUNDATION!
Why do these steps actually matter? Stay with me to learn.
"Garbage in, garbage out..."
This is a concept mostly used in math and computer science. It actually means that output is determined by the quality of the input.
The quality of information coming out can never be better than the quality of information went it.
Now, don't take me wrong. I don't say your lyrics are garbage. But check out this example, let me open your eyes a little bit...
When you "rip" a beat off Youtube and convert it to "best quality mp3" file with some of online Youtube converters, you're actually downloading "garbage quality" sound.
Again, I'm not saying that beat is trash, but the mp3 audio file you just downloaded basically is!

How do I know that? Well, when you play the beat and look at the EQ, you will notice that part above 18kHz is actually missing. Empty. Void. You didn't know that? Wait, there's more!
Even if you download it as 320kbps mp3 as most converters claim, it's still highly compressed audio file with a lot of its data lost compared to the original (typically around 128kbps or even less).
When you mix it with vocals, do some EQ-ing, compression, do this, do that, not listening on several device types (eg. phone, speakers, monitors)... There goes your foundation...
You can't really get good sound using low quality beats as a starting point. And listeners notice that, especially new ones.
"Why would you risk your first impression and lose fans because of low sound quality!?"
I don't need to tell you how many times I'm listening to music on Spotify, then suddenly, a wild low quality song appears in my auto-generated playlist.
You can guess what happens next - skip song, ignore artist, and never heard from him again.
This can happen to your music, if you don't treat it well! And it's no joke!
First impression will dictate how people view you in the future and what they expect when they see your name.
"What do you think your fans would expect from you right now?"
Bad mixes and low quality sounds like we mentioned before are silent artist killer.
One of the reasons why listeners skip songs on Spotify.
One-quarter of all songs played on Spotify are skipped WITHIN THE FIRST FIVE SECONDS of listening, according to a study carried out via music analysis company The Echo Nest.
"What!?"
Risking your song to be skipped because of bad quality, and preventing listener to dive into the track and hear your lyrics.
You don't want to give them a reason to skip your song right away! Why would anyone want that!?
That's the first thing you should take care of before distributing your song!

What do all these have in common, except they are pretty much the same?
"They don't work!"
This is equivalent of going on a date with totally random stranger asking to make love right away on the table.
Best way to go if you want people to avoid your music. And I think you don't want that, don't you?
Same texts are sent to random stranger DMs on a daily basis, including keywords like buy my song, like my song, follow me, stream my song here and so on and on.
Why would anyone follow anyone without a valid reason?Or stream a song? Or BUY a song?
No one BUYS anything if they either don't know you or don't see value in what you're asking them to do. It's as simple as that. Marketing basics. Even works in music!
You can try to force your music on people and "force" them to listen, like the people in the screenshots I provided, but they'll probably never come back asking for more.
